After re-watching this drama several times, I've decided that it's one of my all time favorites. It isn't for everyone, since I know a lot of people aren't into wuxia or period dramas, but this is different and it's amazing. Liu Shi Shi who plays Yan San Niang showed an immense change in characters.
Now growing out of her standard Mary-Sue character type (someone who is a frail beauty that always needs saving and ends up "valiantly" sacrificing herself to save the love of her life, the author typically makes this kind of character flawless in personality), Shi Shi plays a skilled and smart thief. The actors and actresses are perfect in their roles and there are some seriously cute and funny parts. Shi Shi and Ma Tian Yu as He Xiao Mei work so well together. I didn't really like Wallace Huo before this because of his teeth, but he was great here.
My only character issues are Tong Li Ya as Jing Ru Yi and Edwin Sui as Ying Wu Qiu. The actors were great, but i really didn't like the characters. Yeah there were times I likes Jing Ru Yi, and she was beautiful, but she was the typical Mary-Sue I mentioned earlier. You'll understand when you watch it. Also, Ying Wu Qiu was simply a despicable character. He was a bad guy so you would expect to hate him, but for me there were absolutely no moments were I liked or even pitied him. Another antagonist you'll meet later is also very cold-hearted, but he emits an aura of insane cooliness and genius that just makes his character pretty cool despite his gruesome actions. Compared to him, Ying Wu Qiu has absolutely no redeemable factor, not even his history that you'll get later on. I also did hate Chai Hu's kid at first, but she gets pretty lovable later on. And I will forever hate the kid's mother. Forever. You'll see.
Li Ge Xiao is skilled in martial arts and has the brain to match it. In his former life, he was a high ranking Marshal with great law enforcement authority. But after his enemy framed him with false crime and executed his family, he went on the run. Years later, he came out of hiding to help a former colleague recover stolen gold for disaster relief. With his new partners, thief Yan San Niang, grafter He Xiao Mei, and muscle Chai Hu, they formed a bandit called "Yi Zhi Mei" that robs the rich and the corrupted and gives to the poor and the helpless. I think this was adapted from a Japanese manga. There are two other Korean adaptations. I've seen one of them and if there are any requests if you want to see it but don't know what it's about, I'll write a review for that too. It's called Iljimae. It's pretty good too, but not as good. Just saying.

Oh my god. Looking at this picture always gives me the shivers. By the way, that's He Xiao Mei the grafter. Ughhhh. Amazingly creepy.
